Ben Roethlisberger: The Fourth Quarter Kid?
We received an inquiry from one of our readers (ok, perhaps from our only reader) regarding the number of fourth quarter comebacks that have been engineered by Ben Roethlisberger. Inasmuch as we exist to meet the information needs of our reader(s) we set to work immediately to find an answer.Using a fairly liberal definition of "comeback" (we decided to include games in which the Steelers were tied or trailing at the end of the third quarter, or trailed during the fourth quarter), here are the games in which Mr. Roethlisberger led the team to victory:
| Date | Opponent | 3rd Qtr Score | Final Score | Notes |
| 10/3/04 | Bengals | 14-17 | 28-17 | |
| 10/17/04 | Cowboys | 10-20 | 24-20 | |
| 12/12/04 | Jets | 3-3 | 17-6 | |
| 12/18/04 | Giants | 23-24 | 33-30 | |
| 10/10/05 | Chargers | 14-13 | 24-22 | Trailed in 4th qtr. 21-22 |
| 10/31/05 | Ravens | 17-10 | 20-19 | Trailed in the 4th qtr. 17-19 |
| 11/12/06 | Saints | 24-24 | 38-31 | |
| 11/19/06 | Browns | 3-10 | 24-20 | |
| 12/31/06 | Bengals | 7-3 | 23-17 | Trailed in 4th qtr. 14-17, won game in overtime |
| 11/11/07 | Browns | 16-21 | 31-28 | |
| 11/26/07 | Dolphins | 0-0 | 3-0 |
So what's it all mean? Well, in his four seasons with the Steelers Ben Roethlisberger has played 39 games in which the Steelers were victorious. Of those, 11 were of the comeback variety meaning that 28.21% of Mr. Roethlisberger's victories were achieved via fourth quarter comebacks (at least by our definition).
